“Make Your Health A Priority”- Consultant Public Health Physician, LASUTH – Dr. Modupe Akinyinka

According to World Health Organization’s (WHO) estimate, “13 million deaths around the world each year are due to avoidable environmental causes, this includes the climate crisis which is the single biggest health threat facing humanity.” It is on this premise that WHO aims to focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy; and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being as the world celebrates World Health Day with the theme, “Our Planet, Our Health”.

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) was not left out in commemorating the World Health Day as the Community Health & Primary Health Care Department of LASUTH joined its counterparts across the globe in creating awareness to sensitize the residents of Simeon Osundairo Street, Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State, on the need to make their health a priority. This was done Thursday, 7th of April, 2022, during a medical outreach.

Dr. Modupe Akinyinka, Consultant, Public Health Physician and Acting Head of Community Health & Primary Health Care Department and her team, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director, Professor Adetokunbo. O. Fabamwo. She appreciated the Management for its continuous support to the Department over the years.

The Chief Medical Director, Professor Adetokunbo. O. Fabamwo welcomed the team and applauded the Department for its endeavour towards celebrating the World Health Day. He advised the team to create a backup plan that will prioritize those who would need medical and surgical attention after being screened during the exercise.

The CMD spoke highly of the CH&PHC Department, as “a department that has always made the hospital management proud and in return, the hospital management is also proud of the Department”. He mentioned that the Department’s activities and events in the community give the hospital visibility and a positive public image.

He went further to encourage the Department to make plans to create awareness within the hospital staff, sensitize and organize health screening programmes for them to know their general health status, so as to access medical attention on time and avoid untimely deaths.

Dr. Modupe Akinyinka during the outreach program explained the essence of World Health Day, as a day set aside by the World Health Organization (WHO) to draw attention to people’s health as this year’s theme, “Our Planet, Our Health” signifies. She said the purpose of the medical outreach is to commemorate the Day by sensitizing the community about the importance of taking care of the planet (environment) we live in and also to educate them about the connection a healthy planet has to the health of human beings.

She said the health of people is a very important thing which needs to be prioritized by making efforts to take proper care of it. She explained that the CH & PHC Department took an action to meet the people in the community half way by providing free medical consultation free drugs, free blood sugar check, free blood pressure check, free HIV screening & counseling and give a health talk.

Dr. Toriola Femi-Adebayo, a Consultant Public Health Physician in the Department also advised people during the health talk to always recycle plastic bottles and cans of fizzy drinks, as part of ways to ensure the planet stays clean for people to remain healthy. She also advised that people should not hesitate to visit the hospital for regular checkups so that any abnormality can be diagnosed and treated early.

World Health Day is usually celebrated every 7th April every year.
