Ohanaeze Inaugurates Lobby Panel, Restates Igbo Presidency Benefits

THE apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has set up a committee to lobby critical stakeholders across the country to support the South-East to produce the president in 2023.

The Political Action Committee will be chaired by the President-General Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Amb George Obiozor, while the Secretary-General, Amba Okey Emuchay, would serve as the Secretary.

Obiozor, who disclosed this while addressing journalists shortly after the Ohanaeze National Executive Council meeting in Enugu on Thursday, said the job of the committee was to recognize all the critical stakeholders in the election and persuade them to support the South-East to produce the president for equity, justice and fairness.

According to him, “This committee is a persuasion team. They will recognize those that are critical in the election from different parts of Nigeria and within our own group (South-East) because there may be those who are critical here but they don’t want to participate for one reason or the other.

“So we’ll encourage, persuade them and then among our people running for election, you advise those who want to be advised and those who don’t want to be advised you still try to advise them. But we are non-partisan, non-political.”

Speaking on the state of the nation, the President-General said that Nigeria, after about 62 years of nationhood, needed introspective and retrospective thinking to reassess her journey as a nation.

He said, “In doing so, include a serious re-examination of our history as one nation. If the truth must be told, the nation has made two consistent mistakes that have worsened the nation’s other problems leading to near breaking points.

“Those two devils in Nigerian politics are a power-sharing and social injustice. In all, we drifted into these two problems with nonchalance or with ease, and sometimes oblivious of their consequences until what we think is a simple or easy problem develops into a national disaster or catastrophe.

“For those who can remember, how did we get into the western region crisis in the 1960s? How did we get to the civil war (1967-1970). How did we get to NADECO (Abiola crisis) and even South-South Avengers?”

On Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Obiozor said Ohanaeze’s position on political solution has not changed.

“We have been consistent in asking for a political solution to the problem including prerogative of mercy for Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom and amnesty,” he reiterated.
